The study, conducted on patients with OCD and major depression, shows that after four years of being treated with the drug, majority of patients experienced some improvement in their symptoms. In a statement, Marc Weisskopf, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the Department Psychiatry at University of California, San Francisco, who was not involved in the study, said that this is the first study to compare long-term efficacy of antiepileptics against placebo, suggesting that the long-term results are not always positive.
In the study, published Archives of General Psychiatry, the researchers analyzed medical records of a total 1,064 psychiatric patients with OCD who were treated metoclopramide for four years, from January 1, 2004 to May 2006.
